Noted engineer and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk has ended his hunger strike, which he initiated to demand more autonomy for Ladakh.
His fast lasted several days, drawing significant attention to the region’s issues, particularly the need for a legislative assembly and safeguards for local culture and resources.
A Call for Autonomy
Wangchuk’s protest highlighted the concerns of Ladakhis following the region’s transition to Union Territory status in 2019. The local population has expressed worries about the preservation of their cultural identity and the management of natural resources.
Wangchuk, who is renowned for his innovative approaches to sustainable development, emphasized that the dialogue for greater autonomy is crucial for the region’s future.
Resuming Talks
Following the end of his fast, Wangchuk announced that talks regarding Ladakh’s governance would resume on December 3. This meeting is expected to bring together various stakeholders, including government officials and representatives from Ladakh’s civil society.
The aim is to address the long-standing demands of the people and establish a framework for governance that respects their rights and aspirations.
Wangchuk’s actions have garnered widespread support from various quarters, with many recognizing his commitment to Ladakhi issues. His fast served as a catalyst for renewed discussions on how best to manage the region’s future amidst changing political landscapes.
